npower today announced it will be offering free boilers to select UK households under the Government’s Energy Company Obligation scheme (ECO).
From 1 July, UK residents who own their own home, or rent it from a private landlord, could be eligible to receive a brand new energy efficient boiler from npower. The scheme is available for households which receive certain state benefits, including State Pension Credit, and lower income households receiving Child Tax Credit.
Households can phone or submit their details via npower.com and the energy provider will conduct a free home assessment and technical survey to find out if they are eligible to receive a free boiler. The assessor will also advise if npower can assist with any other energy improvements, such as loft or cavity wall insulation. The company will then handle the entire process, from application through to installation.
The Energy Saving Trust estimates that boilers account for around 55% of an annual energy bill. Therefore in addition to saving on purchase and installation, eligible households will also benefit from cheaper bills, with an A-rated high-efficiency condensing model and heating controls estimated to offer savings of up to £310 a year*.
The Government’s ECO scheme launched at the beginning of 2013 and set targets for Britain’s major energy suppliers to help vulnerable customers reduce their energy usage. It replaces previous policies such as the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) and the Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP).
David Titterton, director of Green Deal and Obligations for npower, said: “We have been trialling free boiler installations in select areas of the UK and are now pleased to be able provide energy-efficient boilers for eligible households nationwide.”
“Replacing an old boiler can help to keep homes warm and bills down, and contrary to public opinion, summer is the ideal time to upgrade your system and get your home prepared for the colder months. Thousands of homes across Britain could benefit from the ECO scheme, so we’re appealing to households that think they may be eligible to get in touch.”
